Hoover Blue Thunder Plans New Aquatic Facility

Background

Hoover Blue Thunder (HBT), the top performing mid-sized swim team in the greater Birmingham area, boasts an impressive track record. The team currently holds the Southeastern title in the Medium Division in both Short Course and Long Course Championships as well as the Senior County League title.  Under the direction of Coach Rick Moulton, HBT has consistently developed top swimmers in the area including swimmers earning Junior National Qualifying times.   Swimmers who have gone on to swim competitively at the college level include  Ashley Kracke- Georgia Tech, Samantha Sawzak- Western Kentucky, Ryan Cochran- LSU, Amanda Williams- Tulane, Jana Jones- St. Louis, Michael Bottchen- Indian River, Leah Thornton- Miami of Ohio, Virginia Selden- Dartmouth, Cameron Bass- Alabama, Catherine Reinagel- Alabama, Rainey White- LSU, and Dru Selden-Kenyon.  Other younger elite swimmers at HBT are on track to compete for college scholarships as well.  Not only are HBT swimmers outstanding athletes, they are outstanding students.

The Need:  An Aquatic Facility in Hoover

Swimming requires hard work and dedication along with adequate facilities in order for these athletes to achieve their goals.  In order to train top performing swimmers, HBT has leased pool space from the Hoover Recreation Center (HRC), the Vestavia YMCA, and the Hoover Country Club.  Due to varying circumstances, lane space and time availability at these facilities are no longer adequate.  This has affected the amount of time that swimmers have to train in the pool each week.  Being at three different locations has its challenges which is why HBT desires to have an aquatic facility of their own where all levels of swimmers can train together at one location.
